Gutter surveys near Debden

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Debden

Gutters have to slope gently towards the outlet or water sits in them. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing where the gutter dips. We look along each run for sags, gaps and leaking joints, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. Common reasons to book are hoppers and outlets full of debris and valley or box gutters that overflow inside, on valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits.

Some older homes in villages like Debden are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

Where we cannot see part of the gutter, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

How the survey works

It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Somewhere like Debden needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
  4. We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Different roofs, different checks

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear, and brackets can sag under load.

What we can’t see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Debden homes and their roofs

With Horham Hall about 3.1 miles south-east, Debden sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

Take an older house close to Church of St Mary and All Saints: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Joyce Frankland Academy, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you let a flat or house near Newport (Essex) station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
