Gutter survey in Didling, West Sussex
Find out the condition of the gutter at your property in Didling. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Soffits marked by water
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Cracked or loose downpipes
What this survey cannot tell you
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- The inside of buried drains
- Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
- Blockages deep inside downpipes

About our gutter survey in Didling
We look at the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It’s not a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Anything we find above ground, such as a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. We survey eaves gutters, valley gutters and downpipes, and the problems we are asked to look at most are dripping or leaking gutter joints and gutters overflowing in heavy rain.
Older buildings in small places like Didling may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How it works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, emailed to you. As for time on site, it normally takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older rural homes like those around Didling can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
- We look at hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A report with photographs and recommendations follows.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property

For landlords and managing agents
Landlords and agents in Didling book surveys as well as householders. A report with photos gives you a clear record of the gutter, useful for planning maintenance.
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
Do you need a gutter survey in Didling?
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn, and they collect at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
Common reasons to book include:
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Gutters full of debris and silt
The streets around a church like Church of St Andrew are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Questions from Didling
Is Didling within the area you cover?
Yes, Didling is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Is my home in Didling listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
How long does a gutter survey take?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.

How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. We note soft, stained or damaged boards we can see.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Lead linings are common in valleys and parapet gutters on older houses. A split lining can leak straight into the building.
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
- Have overhanging branches cut back
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We email it to you once it’s done.
Hidden gutters need clearing too. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Didling
With Uppark about 3.7 miles west, Didling sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
