Gutter survey in Durfold Wood

Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. Photos show each problem clearly. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and eaves gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are blocked outlets and hoppers and leaves and moss blocking gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Durfold Wood, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

FAQs for Durfold Wood

I let a flat near Witley station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.

Will you come out to Durfold Wood?

Yes. Durfold Wood is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

What does a gutter survey cost?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.

Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?

Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We use the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it is safe, and by drone where it is applicable.

Why get it checked now?

Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. Our survey covers everything that’s safely in view and records it with photos. For older village homes like those around Durfold Wood, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

What happens on the day

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It typically takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Durfold Wood often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
  4. Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
  5. You get a report with photos and recommendations.

Advice

Before and after the survey

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
  • Check downpipe clips are holding
  • Watch the gutters during heavy rain

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you cannot check them from the street, so check they’re included in any clearing work.

Checking the roof from ground level

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT.

Booking your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • What made you get in touch
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.

Gutter surveys around Durfold Wood

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

For an older house near a landmark like Holy Trinity Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. For landlords with property near Witley station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you look after a building such as Plaistow and Kirdford Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
