Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Four Oaks
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. We’re often asked to look into gutters packed with leaves or moss and overflowing valley or parapet gutters, across downpipes, eaves gutters and parapet and box gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Four Oaks, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on what can safely be seen, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Different roofs, different checks
Cast iron gutters
Cracks often open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.
Fascias and soffits
On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.

How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Somewhere as small as Four Oaks, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
Getting a price

Your questions about gutter surveys in Four Oaks
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Four Oaks, take more of a battering?
Often, yes. Within about 3 miles of the sea, as Four Oaks is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.
Is my home in Four Oaks listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
There’s no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.

What affects the price in Four Oaks
Prices always include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- House, block, shop or office
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.
Helping us price your survey
A little information up front helps. It is useful to include:
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- What kind of property and roof it is
- The property’s address and postcode
- What made you get in touch
When you are ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it is a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
When to book a survey in Four Oaks
Many people get in touch after seeing water pour over a gutter in heavy rain. Others notice a damp wall, a stained ceiling or a green streak down the brickwork. A survey helps show where the water is coming from before it causes more harm.
Look out for signs like these:
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
Take a building like Luddenham School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Four Oaks
The coast is about 3 miles or less from Four Oaks, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Historic houses like Belmont House and Gardens, about 3.4 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Four Oaks goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
If you live near a park like Oare Meadow, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys. Take an older house close to St Mary's Church: old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
