Gutter survey in Heybridge Basin, Essex
An experienced roof surveyor for gutter surveys in Heybridge Basin. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
Checking the roof from the ground
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
How a gutter survey works in Heybridge Basin
A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing at the low points. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. We survey parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and valley gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are leaking or loose downpipes and gutters full of debris and silt.
Older buildings in small places like Heybridge Basin may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we’re asked to look at in Heybridge Basin
Overflowing gutters in a downpour are a common reason to book. Others spot damp patches, ceiling stains or green marks on the walls. The survey helps pin down the source before it causes more harm.
Problems we come across often include:
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St George's Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. For an older or listed building in a place like Heybridge Basin, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Heybridge Basin
Do you cover smaller places like Heybridge Basin?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Heybridge Basin, take more of a battering?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details like ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it’s safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe and a drone where it applies.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What we do, step by step
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Rural addresses near Heybridge Basin can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

What we look for on each type of roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear, and brackets can sag under load.
Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Before and after the survey
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records to help plan maintenance. The photos help when you explain the work to others.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they usually grow and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.
Heybridge Basin homes and their roofs
Heybridge Basin lies within about 1 mile of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
If you look after a building such as Heybridge Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.
