About our gutter survey in Iping

We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Iping and right across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view from the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it is safe. Time on site typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows, with photos and recommendations. We survey eaves gutters, fascias and soffits and valley gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are fascia boards damaged by overflowing water and sagging gutters and loose brackets.

In a village or hamlet like Iping, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

Before and after the survey

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Look for downpipes coming loose
  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder

Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We email it to you once it is done.

Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but they’re much harder to spot, so make sure they’re included in any clearing work.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older roofs in small places like Iping can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Different roofs, different checks

Box and secret gutters

Box and secret gutters often cause leaks indoors. We look at the outlets, linings and overflows where safe.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.

Common questions in Iping

Do you cover smaller places like Iping?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Iping?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

What do I do with the report?

The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

How many surveys have you done?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No. We do not test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Can the survey be at a weekend?

Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us to arrange a day.

Honest limits

It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.

Gutter surveys in Iping: local notes

About 2.5 miles east lies Cowdray House, a reminder of how long the area around Iping has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

For landlords with property near Liphook station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Take a building like Stedham Primary School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
