  • Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods

About our gutter survey in Midhurst

A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. Common reasons to book are water spilling over the gutter edge and dripping or leaking gutter joints, on outlets and hoppers, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters.

Around Midhurst, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Common questions in Midhurst

Do you carry out roof surveys in Midhurst?

Yes, Midhurst is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Midhurst within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Midhurst?

Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, CCTV drain work is not part of this survey. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Any time of year works. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan though problems often show up after heavy rain.

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.

Do you need a gutter survey in Midhurst?

Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic sections expand and contract with the weather so their joints can start to leak. Cast iron joints can corrode and part where the paint has failed.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits
  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped
  • Cracked or loose downpipes

If you look after a building such as Midhurst CofE Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • When you’ll get the report
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection

What a roof survey includes

Roof by roof

Box and secret gutters

Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Outlets, linings and overflows are checked as far as access allows.

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Lead linings are common in valleys and parapet gutters on older houses. Splits and failed joints in the lead can let water straight in.

Tips that help

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Watch the gutters during heavy rain
  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork

Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.

Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you can’t check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

What we do, step by step

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a smaller place like Midhurst, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

What a gutter survey looks like in Midhurst

Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
