Knightwood Gutter Survey

We carry out gutter surveys in Knightwood and the rest of Hampshire. We survey seven days a week.

  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris

Gutter surveys for Knightwood homes and businesses

Different roofs, different checks

Fascias and soffits

Fascias carry the gutters, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. We note soft, stained or damaged boards we can see.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and split. We look at the joints, brackets and falls.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Knightwood

Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot, but many aren’t. Valley, parapet, box and secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We look at them as far as they can safely be seen using vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Common reasons to book are gutters full of debris and silt and choked outlets or hopper heads, on eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits.

Around Knightwood, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention. Nails and battens under older coverings often give out before the slates or tiles themselves.

The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Common questions in Knightwood

Is Knightwood within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Can a landlord with a rental near Chandlers Ford station book a roof survey?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need.

Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?

Yes, where it is safe to see them. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

What does the report include?

Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you look in the roof space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

Do you need a gutter survey in Knightwood?

Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. Added roof area from an extension can load an older gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters

Take a building like Knightwood Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What insurance they carry
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What a good roof survey covers

Prices for gutter surveys in Knightwood

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Roof area
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The shape of the roof and its details

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • When you need the report by

If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.

How the survey works

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. A visit to Knightwood is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. First, you let us know what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, like valleys and parapets, where it is safe to see them.
  4. We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Checking the roof from the ground

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

Tips that help

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Have overhanging branches cut back
  • Note any damp stains below the gutters
  • Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out

If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.

Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.

Knightwood homes and their roofs

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. About 3.7 miles south lies South Stoneham House, a reminder of how long the area around Knightwood has been built on. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Francis, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Chandlers Ford station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Knightwood is about 1 mile west of Chandler's Ford, in Hampshire. Wherever you are in Knightwood, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Across Hampshire, we cover Knightwood and the places around it.

Gutter surveys in SO53 and SO52 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We also cover Chilworth Old Village (2 miles south-west), Chilworth (2 miles south), North Baddesley (2 miles west), Toothill (3 miles south-west) and Bassett (3 miles south). We also work in nearby towns like Winchester (6 miles north-east), Eastleigh (3 miles south-east), Fareham (13 miles south-east), Totton (7 miles south-west), Hedge End (7 miles south-east) and Romsey (4 miles west).
