New Alresford questions
Do you carry out roof surveys in New Alresford?
Yes, New Alresford is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Is New Alresford within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No, that is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so you can arrange that check.
Do you survey underground drains?
No. We look at above-ground rainwater only down to where the downpipes reach the ground. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Gutter survey in New Alresford
Damp patches on inside walls, stains below a valley or water running down the brickwork can often be traced to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, as far as can be seen safely. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so, with a suggested next step. We survey outlets and hoppers, downpipes and parapet and box gutters, and people most often book us about soffits marked by water and gutters full of debris and silt.
In a smaller place like New Alresford, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A close look shows whether anything has started to loosen. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Gutter surveys around New Alresford
With Hinton Ampner House about 3 miles south, New Alresford sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Anyone responsible for a site like Sun Hill Junior School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St John the Baptist, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.
Landlords and letting agents in New Alresford book surveys as well as householders. A report with photos gives you a clear record of the gutter, useful for planning maintenance.
Tips from our surveys
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Look out for overflows when it pours
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Check from the ground or a window, not a ladder
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes, and if it does not, raise it with whoever did the job.
Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. You can see drips and overflows from the ground but hidden gutters are another matter. Our survey covers everything that’s safely in view and records it with photos. With lower homes, common in places like New Alresford, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Roof by roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.
Cast iron gutters
Cracks frequently open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.

What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. A visit to a smaller place like New Alresford is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Getting ready for the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
