Gutter survey in North Street, Hampshire
Gutter surveys in North Street, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. Every survey ends with a written report and photos.
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
What we’re asked to look at in North Street
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that holds water in the gutter and gives plants somewhere to grow.
People usually book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Soffits marked by water
- Gutters full of debris and silt
Take an older house close to Church of St Peter: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

How a gutter survey works in North Street
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that normally means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. If you’ve noticed gutters that have fallen out of line and valley or box gutters that overflow inside, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like North Street are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

North Street: your questions answered
Is North Street within the area you cover?
Yes, North Street is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in North Street?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Do you survey underground drains?
No, we don’t carry out CCTV drain surveys. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
How much is a gutter survey?
Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. For a price for your building, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
How the survey works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. On timing, it typically takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Somewhere like North Street needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level and from windows.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- You get a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
Getting a price

Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so you can arrange a drain survey. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Get the gutters cleared every year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.
How the survey changes by roof type
Box and secret gutters
Box and secret gutters often cause leaks indoors. Outlets, linings and overflows are checked as far as access allows.
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. We note soft, stained or damaged boards we can see.
What we can’t see
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Why it’s worth a survey now in North Street
Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like North Street, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Local roofs in North Street
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 3.9 miles north lies Bentworth Hall, a reminder of how long the area around North Street has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ropley Church of England Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
