When you need someone else

It is a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

How a gutter survey works in Warsash

We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Warsash and right across London and the South East. We inspect everything we can see safely from ground level, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe. Time on site typically takes about one to two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. If you are worried about water backing up from a hidden gutter and gutters packed with leaves or moss, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on parapet and box gutters, downpipes and fascias and soffits alike.

In a smaller place like Warsash, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How we price gutter surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How big the roof is
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT.

Warsash: your questions answered

Is Warsash within the area you cover?

Yes, Warsash is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Warsash, take more of a battering?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

What happens next?

You will get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

What’s the best way to book?

It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. Surveys run seven days a week.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.

Tips that help

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Keep climbers away from the eaves
  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Have gutters cleared at least once a year
  • Make sure downpipe clips are holding

If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we are there.

Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. They tend to get worse and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

What we do, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a smaller place like Warsash, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Before the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Gutter surveys in Warsash: local notes

Warsash is within about 2 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. If you look after a building such as Hook-With-Warsash Church of England Academy, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Living close to Hamble Common is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Warsash is about 4 miles west of Fareham, in Hampshire. Warsash is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Warsash is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

Within a short drive, we also cover Winchester (14 miles north), Gosport (7 miles south-east), Havant (13 miles east), Eastleigh (8 miles north), Fareham (4 miles east) and Horndean (13 miles east).
