Gutter surveys around Locks Heath
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Locks Heath, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Take a building like Park Gate Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Take an older house close to St John: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Locks Heath is about 3 miles west of Fareham, in Hampshire. Locks Heath gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful look at what can be seen safely, photographs and a clear written report. Locks Heath is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work. Southampton is in our area too.
We survey roofs across SO31, PO14 and PO15 for gutter surveys and the streets around it. If you need a gutter survey at a property on Church Road, Lower Church Road and Laxton Close or a nearby road, we can help. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter surveys include Titchfield Common (1 mile south-east), Park Gate (1 mile north), Warsash (1 mile south-west), Sarisbury (1 mile north-west) and Segensworth (1 mile north-east). We also work in nearby towns like Winchester (14 miles north), Gosport (6 miles south-east), Havant (12 miles east), Eastleigh (8 miles north-west), Fareham (3 miles east) and Horndean (12 miles east).
Local landmarks in Locks Heath
Around Locks Heath, our work takes us to homes and buildings near Brookfield Community School and Language College and Jolly Farmer Public House and the streets around them. Not far away are Holly Hill Woodland Park.
Gutter survey in Locks Heath: what you get
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It is an easy job to put off but it rarely improves. Common reasons to book are overflowing valley or parapet gutters and overflowing eaves gutters, on valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and downpipes.
In a smaller place like Locks Heath, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

Why get it checked now?
Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. From ground level you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it’s safe to see and put it in writing. Homes in smaller places like Locks Heath can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more, and water follows.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Locks Heath
Is my home in Locks Heath listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
I let a flat near Swanwick station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?
Yes, where it is safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe and a drone where applicable.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Do you cover Locks Heath?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Locks Heath.
Before and after the survey
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We email it to you once it is done.
Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before the walls suffer.
When to book a survey in Locks Heath
Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic gutters move with heat and cold so their joints can start to leak. On cast iron, joints can rust and open up where the paint has failed.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Soffits marked by water
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
If you let a flat or house near Swanwick station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Parapet and box gutters
- Valley gutters
- Eaves gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Fascias and soffits
- Downpipes
How the survey works
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A visit to a smaller place like Locks Heath is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- First, you let us know what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from the ground and vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
A London butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter and if it blocks, water can come indoors. It’s inspected as far as safe access allows.
