New roof snagging for Upton Grey homes and businesses

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges, hips and verges

Ridges, hips and verges take the most weather. We check mortar, dry-fix systems and fixings where they can be seen.

Flashings

Chimney flashings are a frequent source of leaks, so we check them closely.

About our new roof snagging in Upton Grey

We report on what we see with photos and plain descriptions. If there’s a disagreement about the work, it’s between you and your roofer or builder. What we provide is an independent record of the roof’s condition. The report doesn’t price repairs or settle who is responsible, but it does set out clearly what we found. We’re often asked to look into offcuts and broken tiles left behind and underlay not dressed into the gutter, across loft conversions and dormers, new flat roofs and new-build homes.

Being in a small place like Upton Grey makes no difference to the inspection itself: it just means planning the journey and access beforehand. If there are outbuildings with roofs you want checked, mention them when booking. Whether you’re buying or checking new work, the same care goes into it. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.

The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What new roof snagging looks like in Upton Grey

Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. For a purchase or a newly finished roof, the materials decide which details matter most.

If you own a rental within reach of Hook station, it’s worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, ask the seller about past roof repairs, because older roofs frequently have patched valleys, replaced slates and reset ridges.

Why it is worth a survey now in Upton Grey

You may not see a fault until it causes damage. Checking early gives you a record of the roof’s condition at handover. Older and listed buildings around Upton Grey may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

When you need someone else

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • What’s under the new coverings
  • How the roof will perform for years to come
  • Areas out of view from each safe vantage point

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Replacement roofs
  • Loft conversions and dormers
  • New flat roofs
  • Flashings and valleys
  • New-build homes
  • Ridges and verges

How it works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere like Upton Grey needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. First, you let us know what the roofer did and any concerns you have.
  2. The coverings, ridges, hips and verges are checked as far as can safely be seen.
  3. Flashings, valleys, gutters and visible underlay at the eaves are looked at.
  4. The roof space is looked at where safe, along with any mess or damage left after the work.
  5. We send a photo-illustrated written report of each snag.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Booking a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Advice

Common questions in Upton Grey

Is my home in Upton Grey listed or in a conservation area?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Will you come out to Upton Grey?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

What do you check on a new roof?

We check the coverings, ridges, verges, hips, valleys and flashings, along with ventilation, gutters and the underlay at the eaves. We also look for debris left behind and damage to other parts.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

Can you survey in bad weather?

A survey can usually go ahead in light rain. Strong wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather is not suitable.
