Roof leak investigation in South Town: what you get
Our roof leak investigations cover South Town and the wider South East. Surveys are carried out on weekdays and at weekends. We look inside and out, at flashings, valleys, chimneys, gutters and flat roof details. The findings come in a written report with photos. If water is coming in now, catch it in a bucket and keep it away from lights and sockets, and then call 07833 053749 or email us to arrange a visit. If you’re worried about drips in the loft during heavy rain and staining where a gutter or parapet meets the wall, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a village or hamlet like South Town, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. We check everything that’s safely in view and set out what we find. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Clear the loft hatch so we can get in
- Let us know what has already been tried
- Leave roof access to professionals
- Put a bucket under the drip and move valuables
Standard includes a follow-up consultation to talk the findings through, while Premium includes one in person. You can ask us about anything that isn’t clear.
Plan a roof survey every few years. They’re where most leaks start, and wear is easier to deal with before water gets in.

Questions from South Town
Will you come out to South Town?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Is my home in South Town listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Why isn’t the leak directly above the stain?
Because water travels. It can follow a timber or the underlay a long way first, so the stain may be some distance from where it gets in. That’s why we trace the route rather than patching above the stain.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Is it a leak or condensation?
Many apparent leaks turn out to be condensation. A leak usually shows in one area and follows rain, while condensation is often spread out and worse in cold weather. We tell you which it is most likely to be.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.
What a survey costs
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- How big the roof is
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
What to let us know when you get in touch
There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:
- What’s prompted the survey
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- When you need the report by
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
Once you know what you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.
What this survey can’t tell you
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- The repair itself (the investigation finds and reports the cause)
- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Slate and tile slopes
- The roof space
- Rooflights and dormers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roof details
- Lead flashings
Do you need a roof leak investigation in South Town?
Many leaks begin at a flashing. Where a roof meets a chimney, a wall or a dormer, lead or mortar seals the joint. Once that seal cracks or lifts, water gets behind it, often well away from where it shows.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Water that shows only in certain storms
- Damp underlay across a wide area
- Water dripping from rafters or underlay
- Damp patches next to the stack
Anyone responsible for a site like Medstead Church of England Primary School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Wind, rain and roofs in South Town
With Bentworth Hall about 1.4 miles north-east, South Town sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
The streets around a church such as Church of St Andrew are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you let a flat or house near Alton station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
South Town is about 4 miles west of Alton, in Hampshire. Roofs in South Town get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Hampshire. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.

The survey, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, though a hard-to-trace leak can take longer. For a village or hamlet like South Town, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- You let us know where the water appears, when, and what the weather was doing.
- We examine the damp area and the rooms near it.
- From the roof space, we trace the water’s route where there’s safe access.
- We inspect the likely entry points outside, from the ground, windows and the roof where safe.
- We email a written report showing where the water most likely gets in.
How to prepare
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
