Roof survey in Adversane
The report is written for you, in plain language. Each defect is described with photos and a recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. If you’ve noticed valley linings that have cracked or split and flashings that have come away from the wall, we can find out what’s behind it, on lead flashings, natural slate and chimney stacks alike.
In a village or hamlet like Adversane, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it is usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
Honest limits
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- A structural engineer’s report
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Most visits take an hour or two for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Adversane: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Adversane is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Billingshurst station?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. Where we see something that needs a structural engineer, the report says so. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
Will the report say how many years my roof has left?
Not as a figure. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it is wearing, with recommendations ranked by urgency.

Common roof problems in Adversane
The coverings are rarely the first thing to fail. ‘Nail fatigue’ is common on slate roofs: the nails rust and the slates slide. On tiled roofs, the battens or pegs may be what’s gone.
Look out for signs like these:
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
- Ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Torn or sagging underlay
Take a building like The Weald School: long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- What insurance they carry
- Their report turnaround times
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A small roof defect usually gets bigger. One slipped slate lets water reach the battens and underlay, and wet timber starts to decay. Finding it early keeps the work smaller. For older village homes like those around Adversane, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
