Roof survey in Fairstead: what you get
Roofs vary a lot across London and South East England. A Victorian or Edwardian terrace may have slate, a central valley gutter and parapet walls, while many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles. Whatever yours has, the survey is adapted to it. Some older homes have clay tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension as well. Every part gets the attention it needs. If you’re worried about crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching and condensation or damp timbers in the loft, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Fairstead, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on what can safely be seen, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
How we price roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Which survey package you book
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.
What to tell us when you contact us
Before you get in touch, it is useful to have:
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
Getting a price is simple: just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us some details about the property and we will recommend the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
Honest limits
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- A structural engineer’s report
- A promise that the roof won’t leak in future
- Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
Letting agents and landlords in Fairstead book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, useful for planning maintenance.
How it works
There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Older roofs in small places like Fairstead can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You pick the package that suits your roof.
- We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
- Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
- Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Tell us about parking before the day

Fairstead: your questions answered
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near White Notley station?
Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details.
Is my home in Fairstead listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Do you go up on the roof?
Where it’s safe, yes. We also inspect from the ground, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.
Do you look in the loft space?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
What’s covered in a roof inspection?
We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, plus the roof space where there’s safe access. The report includes photos and recommendations.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
When to book a survey in Fairstead
Every roof takes years of rain, wind, sun and frost. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while rain gets into every gap. Small faults that start this way grow over time.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
For landlords with property near White Notley station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
What to check before booking
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Are they insured for the work?
- What follow-up you get after the report
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
Local roofs in Fairstead
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Anyone responsible for a site like Terling Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
