Roof survey in Further Quarter
Across London and South East England, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, and many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles instead. We adapt the survey to the roof in front of us. Some older homes have clay tiles, and many have a flat-roofed extension as well. Each part is checked in the way that suits it. If you’ve noticed leaning or weathered chimney stacks and blocked, sagging or leaking gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Further Quarter are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Signs you need a roof survey in Further Quarter
The underlay under the coverings matters too. Breathable membranes only appeared in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Torn or sagging felt lets water through.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
- Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
If you own a rental within reach of Pluckley station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Further Quarter questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Further Quarter?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Pluckley station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
We don’t put a figure on it, because so much depends on the fixings, underlay and upkeep. What we do is explain the roof’s condition and what to deal with first.
Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?
Yes. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.
How do I book a survey in Further Quarter?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on any day of the week.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Tips from our surveys
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Keep the report with your property records
- Tell us about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Photograph stains when they appear
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. It makes the next steps much clearer.
Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Use a gutter contractor rather than climbing a ladder yourself. Most overflow damage starts with a blocked gutter.

Honest limits
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- A structural engineer’s report
- A full building survey of the property
- An exact number of years the roof has left
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Lead flashings
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Natural slate
- Ridges, hips and valleys
- Chimney stacks
- The roof space
- Flat roofs
What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Somewhere as small as Further Quarter, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Further Quarter
Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
