About our pre-purchase roof survey in Further Quarter
Some roofs can’t be seen well from ground level or from windows. Our Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and, where applicable, a drone inspection, along with a same-day report. Where a flight is not possible, because of airspace rules or the weather, we tell you and look from the ground, windows and the loft instead. If you’ve noticed roof slopes that look uneven or sagging and bitumen or mortar used in place of proper repairs, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Further Quarter may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials a new roof may use, so check with the council and Historic England’s list. For a buyer or someone with a newly finished roof, it is worth knowing which applies, as well as what condition the roof is in. There are about 500,000 listed buildings and around 10,000 conservation areas in England.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What a pre-purchase roof survey looks like in Further Quarter
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Each material has its own typical faults, which is what a buyer or the owner of a new roof needs to know about.
For any home in Further Quarter, it is the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right. Landlords with a home close to Pluckley station may find that a roof report gives you a clear picture before you buy or settle up with a roofer.

Questions from Further Quarter
Do you cover Further Quarter?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Further Quarter as anywhere else.
Is my home in Further Quarter listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the survey around it.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.
When should I book a pre-purchase roof survey?
The sooner after your offer is accepted, the better. You need the report before you exchange, while you can still ask questions and negotiate.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it is applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
How the survey works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere as small as Further Quarter, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- Once your offer has been accepted, you book and give us the address and your timescale.
- We arrange access with you, the agent or the seller.
- The roof is inspected from every safe vantage point, inside and out.
- Each part of the roof is examined and photographed.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations to read before exchange.
How to prepare
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
How to book
If you’re buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email when you are ready.

- Confirmation of asbestos in cement sheets or soffits
- The condition of the rest of the house (that is a RICS home survey)
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Further Quarter
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.
Tips from our surveys
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Check we’ll be able to get into the roof space
- Arrange the survey as soon as your offer is agreed
- Check the lease for roof repair responsibilities
- Ask whether there are papers for past roof work
With Standard, you get a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation. Whichever package you choose, you can ask us what a finding means.
Look in the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. Watch for stains, damp timbers and chinks of daylight. Photos help if you later need a roofer or another survey.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
