Roof survey in Moreton: what you get
Everything we check, we check safely: from ground level, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it is safe. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where applicable, for roofs that are hard to see well. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Each defect we find is photographed and explained. If you’re worried about ridge tiles that have lifted or moved and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Moreton, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it is normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
For landlords and managing agents
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.

Moreton: your questions answered
Is my home in Moreton listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Moreton within the area you cover?
Yes, Moreton is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
What’s the best way to book?
It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. Surveys run seven days a week.
Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?
No. Where we see something that needs a structural engineer, the report says so. We don’t provide structural calculations.
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Can you survey in bad weather?
A survey can normally go ahead in light rain. Strong wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so we’ll agree a new date if the weather is not suitable.
Useful tips for Moreton property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Include dormers, porches and garages when booking
- Gather any paperwork for past roof work
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
- Let us know about past leaks
We email the report to you. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Each finding is set out in plain English, with recommendations.
Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Each report gives a record to compare against.
Leave it or get it looked at?
It’s easier to plan roof work than to react to it. A survey lets you deal with things in order of urgency, rather than calling someone out after a storm. Older cottages and farmhouses around Moreton can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

Common roof problems in Moreton
Blocked gutters cause a surprising amount of damage. Once leaves and moss block a gutter, water spills down the brickwork. Hidden gutters behind parapets and in valleys can send water indoors.
We are often asked to look at:
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
Take a building like Moreton Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
Roof surveys in Moreton: local notes
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Rural addresses near Moreton can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- We check the roof from every safe viewpoint outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
