Roof surveys in Shalden: local notes
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Lasham Airfield is about 2 miles from Shalden. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you own a rental within reach of Alton station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. With Hall Place about 2.5 miles south-west, the area around Shalden has a long history. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up. The streets around a church such as Church of St Peter and St Paul are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
Shalden is about 2 miles north-west of Alton, in Hampshire. We visit Shalden as part of our work across Hampshire, for homes and businesses alike. Our Hampshire coverage includes Shalden and the places around it. We also survey roofs in Reading.

Roof survey in Shalden
We survey roofs in Shalden and across London and South East England. We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us. We survey ridges, hips and valleys, chimney stacks and lead flashings, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are loose ridge or hip tiles and leaning or weathered chimney stacks.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

The survey, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In a hamlet or village like Shalden, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
- We check the roof from every safe viewpoint, inside and out.
- Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Useful tips for Shalden property owners
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Check the roof from ground level after storms
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
Standard includes a follow-up consultation to talk the findings through, while Premium includes a consultation in person. You can ask us about anything that isn’t clear.
Look at your roof from the ground after strong winds. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.
Shalden: your questions answered
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Alton station?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the building, including who will give access on the day.
Are there drone restrictions around Shalden?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Shalden is about 2 miles from Lasham Airfield, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, and the rest of the survey doesn’t depend on the drone.
How do I book a survey in Shalden?
Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Are you insured?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?
Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
Will the report say how many years my roof has left?
Not as a figure. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it’s wearing, and we say what needs attention and how urgently.
What a roof survey doesn’t cover
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- An exact number of years the roof has left
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Why it is worth a survey now in Shalden
Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. A survey lets you deal with things in order of urgency, rather than calling someone out after a storm. Older cottages and farmhouses around Shalden can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, including VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. We confirm the price for your survey before you book.

Take a look at what a roof survey costs and what we found on two real jobs.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
