How a roof survey works in Aldershot

People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, while others just want to know where they stand. Whatever the reason, the survey works the same way: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends, so it’s easy to find a day that suits. If you’ve noticed loose ridge or hip tiles and torn or sagging underlay, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Aldershot mixes older houses, frequently slate or clay tiled, with newer estates, many of them with concrete tiles. Older homes often keep chimney stacks long after the fireplaces went, and their flashings and pointing still matter. Newer homes have fewer chimneys but their own weak points at ridges, verges and gutters.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

How it works

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Parking in a town like Aldershot is normally simple, but let us know if there’s a driveway or any restrictions. The inspection covers everything that’s safely in view from outside, from windows and from the roof space.

  1. We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
  2. We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
  4. We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
  5. We email a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

Checking the roof from the ground

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Aldershot: your questions answered

I let a flat near Aldershot station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is my home in Aldershot listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?

No. If we see signs that need an engineer, such as serious sagging, we’ll say so. We do not provide structural calculations.

Do you carry out asbestos surveys?

No. Asbestos testing isn’t part of our service. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Is Aldershot in your area?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Aldershot included.

How do I arrange a roof survey in Aldershot?

Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.

Tips from our surveys

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Look for debris in the garden after high winds
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Don’t climb onto the roof yourself
  • Let us know about any leaks or stains you’ve seen

The recommendations are prioritised by urgency where relevant. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. It makes the next steps much clearer.

Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Routine surveys pick up wear before it leaks. Compare each report with the last.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Aldershot

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

Landlords and letting agents in Aldershot book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos.

What affects the cost of roof surveys

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Roof area
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Getting in touch

We will typically ask about:

  • What made you get in touch
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange

Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email, let us know about the property and we’ll suggest the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

Aldershot homes and their roofs

Farnham Castle, about 2.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Aldershot. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Trinity, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Anyone responsible for a site like Talavera Junior School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Homes near green spaces such as Princes Gardens can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

What we look for on each type of roof

Clay plain and peg tiles

Older homes in the Weald and across the South East often have clay plain tiles, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. When pegs or battens rot, tiles slip, leaving gaps along the courses.

Chimney stacks

Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will tell you if the flue needs a specialist.
