Roof surveys for homes and businesses in The Haven
Everything we check, we check safely: from ground level, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it is safe. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging and, where it applies, a drone, which helps with tall or steep roofs. You do not need to do anything except give us access. Everything we see is photographed for the report. If you are worried about gutters that overflow in heavy rain and loose chimney pots, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Before and after the survey
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
- Have details of recent roof work to hand
- Take photos of any leaks as they happen
- Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
Standard includes a follow-up consultation to talk the findings through, while Premium includes a consultation in person. You can ask us about anything that isn’t clear.
Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. Look for water marks, damp wood and chinks of light. Photograph anything new.
What happens if roof problems are left?
By the time water marks a ceiling, it is often been getting in for a while. Insulation, plaster and timber can all be damp before you see a stain. From inside the loft space, we can often spot it sooner. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

When to book a survey in The Haven
Some damage starts inside the roof space. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up in the loft, wetting timbers and insulation. It is frequently mistaken for a leak.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
In and around The Haven, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early.

Your questions about roof surveys in The Haven
Does a conservation area affect roof work in The Haven?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Will you come out to The Haven?
Yes, The Haven is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
Do you carry out asbestos surveys?
No. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos. Our report notes any materials that might, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
When will the report arrive?
It depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s emailed to you.
How it works
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Older rural homes like those around The Haven can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We look at the roof from every safe viewpoint outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
What a roof survey looks like in The Haven
If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

What affects the price in The Haven
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Roof area
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, with VAT included.
Helping us price your survey
There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- The address and postcode of the property
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
