Storm damage roof report in Aldwych

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. If you’re worried about damaged ridges and hips and roofs hit by falling trees, we can find out what’s behind it, on ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and gutters and fascias alike.

Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Insurers usually exclude wear and tear, so it’s useful to know whether damage is old or new. That is as true in Aldwych as anywhere in London. Photographs and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.

The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Common questions in Aldwych

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Aldwych?

Normally it’s manageable with a little notice. Let us know what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Is Aldwych in the area you cover?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Aldwych is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when you book.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when you book.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It varies by policy. Many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but check your own wording.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is frequently from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

Leave it or get it looked at?

If a roofer needs to make the roof safe, take photos first if you can do so safely from the ground. That keeps a record of how it looked. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

When to book a survey in Aldwych

When you claim, your insurer may ask for evidence of the damage and its cause. An independent report gives you a clear record to send. Your insurer still makes the decision.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris

If you run a business near Gabriel's Wharf, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Whether the price includes VAT

What a good roof survey covers

Checking the roof from the ground

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

What we cannot see

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • Estimates of repair costs

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flat roofs

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Aldwych

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Aldwych. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. Behind many of their parapets sit butterfly roofs and valley gutters that can’t be seen from the pavement. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

Trees in and around Lincoln's Inn Fields shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Take an older house close to St Mary le Strand: water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

How we price storm damage roof reports

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • The roof’s overall size
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • House, block, shop or office

Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Helping us price your survey

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:

  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

To book a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.
