  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

Storm damage roof report in Ashley

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. If you’ve noticed stains appearing after strong winds and holes or cracks caused by debris, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

For a small place like Ashley, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

The survey, step by step

We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect what can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Around Ashley, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Ashley

Is Ashley within the area you cover?

Yes, Ashley is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Is the coastal weather around Ashley hard on roofs?

It can do. Within about 5 miles of the sea, as Ashley is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Start by complaining to the insurer. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

What affects the price in Ashley

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • Height and safe access
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • House, block, shop or office
  • How big the roof is

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Helping us price your survey

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:

  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

Storm damage roof reports in Ashley: local notes

Ashley lies within about 5 miles of the sea, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

Historic houses such as Walmer Castle, about 4.3 miles east, show how far back building around Ashley goes. Leaks in period homes nearby often come from lead work and valleys that have been patched before. If you let a flat or house near Martin Mill station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you live in an older home near East Studdal Church Hall, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Ashley. For a price for a let property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

Checking the roof from ground level

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Useful tips for Ashley property owners

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
