Storm damage roof report in Martin: what you get
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photos, and what we think the likely cause is. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We aren’t loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. We are often asked to look into broken or displaced guttering and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind, across slate and tile slopes, gutters and fascias and ridges and hips.
Being in a small place like Martin makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It is useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

For landlords and managing agents
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What happens on the day
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Martin can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
- We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.
Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings
Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. We record which are loose or damaged.
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.
Martin roofs and the weather
Martin lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. With Walmer Castle about 3 miles north-east, Martin sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Take a building like Langdon Primary School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Augustine, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney. If you own a rental within reach of Martin Mill station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.
Martin is about 3 miles north-east of Dover, in Kent. Martin is one of many places we visit across Kent, for homes and businesses alike. Our area takes in places right across Kent. For surveys nearby, see our Canterbury page.
Surveys in CT15 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include The Street, Waterworks Lane and Ringwould Road, all of which we cover. We also cover Martin Mill (1 mile south-east), East Langdon (1 mile south-west), West Langdon (1 mile west), Ringwould (1 mile north-east) and Sutton (1 mile north). Within a short drive, we also cover Canterbury (13 miles north-west), Margate (14 miles north), Dover (3 miles south-west), Folkestone (10 miles south-west), Ramsgate (12 miles north) and Broadstairs (13 miles north).

Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- A price for the repairs
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Martin
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Martin?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Will you come out to Martin?
Yes, Martin is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Safely, from the ground or a window. Do not use a ladder or go onto the roof. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
It varies by policy. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what you need to know. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
