What we’re asked to look at in Bishopstone

A storm frequently finds a roof’s existing weak spots. Nail fatigue, eroded ridge mortar and tired flashings can all fail in high winds. We record recent damage alongside older defects.

We’re frequently asked to look at:

  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Roofs hit by falling trees

For site and facilities teams at buildings like The Mandeville School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

What a roof survey includes

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Bishopstone

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. If you’re worried about damaged ridges and hips and water coming in after the storm, we can find out what’s behind it.

Somewhere as small as Bishopstone, older roofs have often been repaired many times. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. We check whatever is safely visible and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What we do, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Older rural homes like those around Bishopstone can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Related advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridge and hip tiles

Water can get in where ridge tiles have moved. Each one is recorded with photos.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

Only your insurer can decide that. We record the damage, with photos and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

It varies by policy. Many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but check your own wording.

Storm damage roof reports around Bishopstone

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference. Some pointers:

  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.
