Independent storm damage roof reports in Canning Town

How a storm damage roof report works in Canning Town

Our storm damage report starts from £150. It is a report with photos, sent by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for that. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey flat roofs, flashings and slate and tile slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged gutters and fascias and damage from fallen branches or debris.

Water getting into a London home often comes from a detail you can’t see from the street: a butterfly roof’s central valley gutter, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or a flat roof over a back addition. For a leak or storm damage in Canning Town, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. A hidden gutter that overflows can send water a long way before it shows.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. We record any damage we can see.

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. The report shows each damaged area.

What we do, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes an hour or two for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there is access.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

How to prepare

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.

What we can’t see

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Areas we can’t see safely

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings
  • Chimney stacks
  • Gutters and fascias

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Canning Town?

When you claim, your insurer may ask for evidence of the damage and its cause. An independent report gives you a clear record to send. Your insurer still makes the decision.

A survey can pick up problems like:

  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Rosetta Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Their insurance cover

Storm damage roof reports in Canning Town: local notes

Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Canning Town. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. Many have butterfly roofs draining to a central valley gutter, with parapet walls and gutters hidden behind them. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.

Take an older house close to St Cedd's Church: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you live near a park such as Keir Hardie Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

Canning Town: your questions answered

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Canning Town?

It depends on the street. If Canning Town has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.

Is my home in Canning Town listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. Repair costs aren’t included, so ask a roofer to quote.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers usually exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. Your insurer decides the claim.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take about one to two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. You will then get the report by email.
