Storm damage roof report in Carisbrooke
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photos, and what we think the likely cause is. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. Typical surveys look at flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and loose or broken chimney pots and cowls, across ridges and hips, flat roofs and flashings.
Houses in smaller places like Carisbrooke can stand more in the open, where driving rain gets into any gap at a ridge, verge or flashing. If a leak shows only when the wind is in a certain direction, that’s a useful clue. Let us know when it happens when you contact us. Gutters and downpipes on the exposed side are worth a look as well.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Wind, rain and roofs in Carisbrooke
Carisbrooke lies within about 4 miles of the sea. What counts as a storm is set by each policy, often gusts of around 55 mph, and the insurer makes the decision. Carisbrooke Castle, about 0.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Carisbrooke. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.
For an older house near a landmark such as St. Mary's Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. For hotels and guest houses around Carisbrooke, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.

What else we do in Carisbrooke
How the survey changes by roof type
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. We look at whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.
Lead flashings
Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.
Common roof problems in Carisbrooke
Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, with photographs.
Problems we come across often include:
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
- Roofs hit by falling trees
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
- Broken or displaced guttering
Homes near green spaces such as Seaclose Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
Before booking anyone
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- What happens after the report arrives
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Is VAT included in the price?
Honest limits
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
- The outcome of a claim
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Gutters and fascias
- Ridges and hips
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flat roofs
The survey, step by step
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a smaller place like Carisbrooke, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.
- You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
- The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Carisbrooke
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Carisbrooke?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is the coastal weather around Carisbrooke hard on roofs?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
How should I record storm damage myself?
Only from the ground or from windows. Do not use a ladder or go onto the roof. Binoculars can help you see damage from below, and we will record the rest.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
How are storm damage reports priced?
A storm damage report starts from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs are not part of the report.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you as you book.
