Storm damage roof report in Gatcombe
Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We’re often asked to look into loose or torn flashings and damage from fallen branches or debris, across chimney stacks, gutters and fascias and slate and tile slopes.
Being in a small place like Gatcombe makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Tips that help
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Photograph the damage safely from below
- Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Honest limits
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
- The outcome of a claim
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Flashings
- Slate and tile slopes
- Gutters and fascias
- Ridges and hips
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
What a survey costs
Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Roof area
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £150, including VAT.
What to tell us when you contact us
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it helps to mention:
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.
Leaks and storm damage in Gatcombe
Gatcombe is within about 5 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
For an older house near a landmark like St. Olave's Church, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you look after a building such as Chillerton and Rookley Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. Historic houses such as Gatcombe House, about 0.2 miles south-east, show how far back building around Gatcombe goes. Leaks in period homes nearby often come from lead work and valleys that have been patched before.
Gatcombe is about 2 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We survey roofs in Gatcombe and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Questions from Gatcombe
Is Gatcombe within the area you cover?
Yes, Gatcombe is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Is my home in Gatcombe listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
How experienced are you?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Who handles emergency protection after a storm?
Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from the ground first if it is safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.
Why get it checked now?
Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Acting quickly normally means less damage overall. In a place like Gatcombe, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

How it works
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere as small as Gatcombe, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
