Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Chappel
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We survey slate and tile slopes, chimney stacks and flashings, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or torn flashings and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind.
Being in a small place like Chappel makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It’s useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Storm damage roof reports around Chappel
There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, alongside a good many post-war and newer estates. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.
If you look after a building such as Chappel Church of England Controlled Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you let a flat or house near Chappel & Wakes Colne station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. If you live in an older home near Church of St Barnabas, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The size of the roof
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
What to tell us when you get in touch
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

- Flashings

- Chimney stacks
- Ridges and hips
- Flat roofs
- Slate and tile slopes
How the survey works
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older roofs in small places like Chappel can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Questions from Chappel
Do you carry out roof surveys in Chappel?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and Chappel is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property.
How do I find out if my home in Chappel is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Chappel?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Only from ground level or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.
How the survey changes by roof type
Ridge and hip tiles
Water can get in where ridge tiles have moved. Each one is recorded with photos.
Slate roofs
Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.
Why it is worth a survey now in Chappel
With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you are not relying only on your own photos. Around Chappel, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.
