Chelsea Harbour questions

Is parking a problem for a survey in Chelsea Harbour?

Normally it is manageable with a little notice. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we will work around them.

How do I find out if my home in Chelsea Harbour is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details as you book.

Do you look in the loft space?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you cover Chelsea Harbour for storm damage roof reports?

Yes. We cover Chelsea Harbour and the rest of Greater London. For a price, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Storm damage roof report in Chelsea Harbour: what you get

Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. Every area of damage is photographed and described. We note any part we couldn’t see. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. We survey slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged gutters and fascias and torn or lifted flat roof coverings.

In a London flat, water can travel some way before it shows. Tracing it back matters, both for dealing with the cause and for any insurance claim. We look at what we are given access to in Chelsea Harbour, inside and out. Tell us when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Honest limits

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • The outcome of a claim

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, inc. VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • The size of the roof
  • Which survey package you book
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

A little information up front helps. It is useful to include:

  • The address and postcode of the property
  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form, let us know about the property and we’ll recommend the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

How it works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. For a visit in Chelsea Harbour, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at what can safely be seen from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Chelsea Harbour roofs and the weather

Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. If your home in Chelsea Harbour is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Chelsea Harbour. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Southside Wandsworth, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary's Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Chelsea Harbour is about 2 miles south-east of Kensington, in Greater London. Anywhere in Chelsea Harbour, we can carry out storm damage roof reports at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. We cover towns and villages across Greater London.

Local landmarks in Chelsea Harbour

Typical jobs here are in homes near Heatherley School of Fine Art, Lots Road pub and Imperial Park and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Langford Primary School (less than half a mile south-west) and Natural History Museum Library and Archives (1.5 miles north). There’s a railway station in Chelsea Harbour itself: Imperial Wharf station. Well-known places in the area include Baynard's Castle (4.3 miles north-east) and Chelsea Stadium Tour And Museum (0.6 miles north-west). Not far away are WWT London Wetland Centre and Battersea Park Lake.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Keep the roof in good order between storms. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. The report notes any damage to the stack.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.

Common roof problems in Chelsea Harbour

Flat roofs can be damaged too. Coverings can tear or peel back at the edges, and water can pond where outlets are blocked. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Problems we come across frequently include:

  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

Take a building like Chelsea Academy: a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.
