About our storm damage roof report in Little Chelsea
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We aren’t loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. If you are worried about stains appearing after strong winds and broken or displaced guttering, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flashings, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias alike.
Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Insurers normally exclude wear and tear, so it is useful to know whether damage is old or new. That’s as true in Little Chelsea as anywhere in London. Photos and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What happens on the day
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Surveys in Little Chelsea can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
How to prepare
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Why get it checked now?
Leaving storm damage can let water into the roof space and rooms below. Further water damage can blur what the storm actually did. A roofer should deal with emergency protection quickly. In Little Chelsea, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Dealing with it early is far less disruptive.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Why us?
- Over 5,000 surveys carried out
- Visits on any day of the week

Questions from Little Chelsea
Is parking a problem for a survey in Little Chelsea?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. The visit is then planned around what’s available.
Is Little Chelsea in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?
The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Before and after the survey
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
- Photograph damage inside the house too
- Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.
Leaks and storm damage in Little Chelsea
Carlyle's House, about 0.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Little Chelsea. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Welsh slate on Victorian and Edwardian terraces is a familiar sight across inner London. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. If your home in Little Chelsea is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Landlords with a home close to Imperial Wharf station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Homes near green spaces like Burton’s Court can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.
