Storm damage roof report in Clay Hill: what you get
We inspect the roof from wherever it can be seen safely: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there is access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. If part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. If you are worried about damaged ridges and hips and water coming in after the storm, we can find out what’s behind it.
In converted houses and blocks across London, water from a roof can run a long way before it shows on a ceiling, sometimes in a different flat from the one below the defect. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. We check what we’re given access to in Clay Hill, inside and out. Let us know when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What we are asked to look at in Clay Hill
Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, with photos.
Common reasons to book include:
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Water coming in after the storm
- Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
- Roofs hit by falling trees
Take a building like St John's CofE Primary School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Will the report include photos?
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Leaks and storm damage in Clay Hill
Outer London has a good many Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. The wider area around Clay Hill has a long history of building, with Forty Hall about 0.7 miles east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Living close to Enfield Town Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you own a rental within reach of Gordon Hill station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
Clay Hill is about 1 mile north of Enfield, in Greater London. Whether the building in Clay Hill is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Clay Hill is one of the towns and villages in Greater London where we work for storm damage roof reports. For surveys nearby, see our London page.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Why act early in Clay Hill
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it’s better to know. We record storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. In Clay Hill, as in much of London, water from a roof defect can reach a neighbour’s home as easily as yours: failed flashings and blocked valley gutters can send water into more than one home. Dealing with it early is far less disruptive.
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

How it works
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. If that applies to your building, it is useful to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Advice
Clay Hill: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Clay Hill?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Is parking a problem for a survey in Clay Hill?
Typically it is manageable with a little notice. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
How do I book a survey in Clay Hill?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?
Only your insurer can decide that. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Wear and tear is usually excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so you know what the roof shows. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
