Storm damage roof report in Crofton Park: what you get

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. Common reasons to book are slates and tiles blown off the roof and lead lifted at abutments, on chimney stacks, flat roofs and gutters and fascias.

In converted houses and blocks across London, water from a roof can run a long way before it shows on a ceiling, sometimes in a different flat from the one below the defect. Tracing it back matters, both for dealing with the cause and for any insurance claim. We look at what we are given access to in Crofton Park, inside and out. Let us know when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

The survey, step by step

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Crofton Park we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

What you can safely check yourself

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Crofton Park

Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. An independent report gives you another view of the roof. What happens next is up to the insurer.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Damage from fallen branches or debris

If you live in an older home near Church of St Hilda, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

What to check before booking

  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
  • How soon the report will arrive

FAQs for Crofton Park

How do I find out if my home in Crofton Park is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Crofton Park?

Sometimes, yes. If Crofton Park has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report follows by email.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What we look for on each type of roof

Lead flashings

Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. We record which are loose or damaged.

Clay and concrete tiles

Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.

Storm damage roof reports around Crofton Park

Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, frequently with Welsh slate roofs. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Crofton Park goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.

If you own a rental within reach of Crofton Park station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Anyone responsible for a site like Stillness Infant School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
