About our storm damage roof report in Crosswater
We inspect the roof from wherever it can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and higher points, from the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe. Every area of damage is photographed and described. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a written report with photos to give to your insurer. We survey chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flashings, and people most often book us about lead lifted at abutments and gutters pulled loose in the wind.
Many homes in small places like Crosswater face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Crosswater
With Farnham Castle about 4.9 miles north, Crosswater sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
For landlords with property near Farnham station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Take a building like St John's CofE Aided Infant School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
Crosswater is about 4 miles south of Farnham, in Surrey. We survey roofs in Crosswater as part of our work across London and South East England. Crosswater is one of the towns and villages in Surrey where we work. Our Guildford page covers surveys nearby.

What happens on the day
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere as small as Crosswater, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.

- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

When to book a survey in Crosswater
Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, with photos.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Stains appearing after strong winds
- Damaged pots on the stack
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Damaged gutters and fascias
If you live in an older home near St John the Evangelist, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Questions from Crosswater
Is my home in Crosswater listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Crosswater?
Yes, Crosswater is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Who handles emergency protection after a storm?
Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it’s safe, photograph the damage before it is covered. Keep receipts for any emergency work.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Can I challenge a declined storm claim?
Raise it with your insurer first. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Chimney stacks
Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. The report notes any damage to the stack.
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. We photograph and describe the damage.
What this survey cannot tell you
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- A decision on your insurance claim
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- Acting for you with the insurer
