Storm damage roof reports in East Hendred

What we are asked to look at in East Hendred

Some people book because a claim has been questioned. An independent report gives you another view of the roof. We can’t say whether the decision will change.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Damaged ridges and hips

If you look after a building such as The Hendreds Church of England School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

What to check before booking

  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Will the report include photos?
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether VAT is added on top

Storm damage roof report in East Hendred: what you get

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. Common reasons to book are new damp or leaks inside and ridge tiles that have come loose, on flashings, gutters and fascias and chimney stacks.

Roofs in small places like East Hendred frequently stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere like East Hendred needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Preparing for the visit

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

FAQs for East Hendred

How do I find out if my home in East Hendred is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is East Hendred within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when booking.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

There’s no single figure. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

Only your insurer can decide that. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

When you need someone else

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

East Hendred roofs and the weather

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings frequently carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Augustine of Canterbury, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. If you own a rental within reach of Didcot Parkway station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away.
