Thermal roof survey in East Hendred
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging frequently helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We survey ceilings below the roof, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are areas of a flat roof that may hold water and areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions.
Somewhere as small as East Hendred, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Honest limits
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- An energy rating for the building

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in East Hendred
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Water that travels before it shows
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Augustine of Canterbury, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
What to check before booking
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Are they insured for the work?
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
Should I look at the roof myself first?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
How the survey changes by roof type
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. Moisture readings are used to check them.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there is a pattern around them.

Flying and imaging in East Hendred
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you look after a building like The Hendreds Church of England School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Why act early in East Hendred
The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Around East Hendred, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around East Hendred can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in East Hendred
Is my home in East Hendred listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is East Hendred within the area you cover?
Yes, East Hendred is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
How do I book a survey in East Hendred?
It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
How experienced are you?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.
