Storm damage roof report in Ewhurst

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We survey flashings, chimney stacks and slate and tile slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are holes or cracks caused by debris and new damp or leaks inside.

Many homes in small places like Ewhurst face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Ewhurst?

Gusts work at anything on a roof that’s loose or exposed. Driving rain then gets in through the gaps. People normally call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Stains appearing after strong winds
  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind

Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and St Paul: water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Before you book anyone

  • Their insurance cover
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Which limits apply to the survey

What to expect from a roof survey

Roof by roof

Lead flashings

Wind can peel back flashings at abutments and stacks. Loose or damaged flashings are photographed and noted.

Flat roof coverings

Debris blown onto a flat roof can puncture the covering or block outlets. We record what we find.

What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Getting in touch

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it’s useful to mention:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, let us know about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

What we do, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Around Ewhurst, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the roof space where it is safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

Advice

When you need someone else

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Areas we cannot see safely

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Questions from Ewhurst

Do you cover smaller places like Ewhurst?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is Ewhurst in the area you cover?

Yes, Ewhurst is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

What do I do if water is coming in?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

There is no single figure. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

That is not something we can promise. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Ewhurst

Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

For landlords with property near Ockley station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you live near a park like Sayer's Croft LNR, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

The report is emailed to you, and you decide what to send to your insurer. We don’t deal with the insurer on your behalf.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
