What you can safely check yourself
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
About our storm damage roof report in Freezywater
When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We’re not loss adjusters and cannot tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We survey flat roofs, flashings and ridges and hips, and common reasons people get in touch are damaged ridges and hips and damage from fallen branches or debris.
Older cottages and houses around Freezywater may have roofs with little or no underlay. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there’s little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Finding where it gets in, and whether it’s old wear or new damage, decides what comes next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are often the first clue.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

What happens on the day
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect between one and two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. A visit to a smaller place like Freezywater is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Wind, rain and roofs in Freezywater
In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. The wider area around Freezywater has a long history of building, with Forty Hall about 1.7 miles west. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Keys Meadow Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. For businesses in and around places such as Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running. If you live near a park such as Gunpowder Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Practical tips
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Check your policy for how to report damage
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.
Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.
