About our storm damage roof report in Godmersham

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Check your own policy wording. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. The claim decision rests with your insurer. Typical surveys look at loose or torn flashings and slates and tiles blown off the roof, on chimney stacks, flashings and gutters and fascias.

For a small place like Godmersham, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit typically takes between one and two hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older rural homes like those around Godmersham can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Tell us about parking before the day

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Before and after the survey

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Check how your policy defines a storm

Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Why act early in Godmersham

It is useful to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. In a small place like Godmersham, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Godmersham

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Godmersham?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Godmersham in the area you cover?

Yes, Godmersham is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. If it is safe, take photos before it goes on. We can record the damage in our report.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Only from the ground or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground, and we will record the rest.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

When you need someone else

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • The outcome of a claim
  • A price for the repairs

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Wind, rain and roofs in Godmersham

Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

If you let a flat or house near Chilham station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. If you live near a park like Godmersham Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. Take an older house close to Church of St Lawrence: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
