How a storm damage roof report works in Goring

Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We survey flat roofs, gutters and fascias and ridges and hips, and people most often book us about damage from fallen branches or debris and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks.

Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Goring can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp on a chimney breast isn’t always rain from above, which is why it is worth tracing properly. It’s worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Goring roofs and the weather

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings frequently carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. Historic houses like Basildon Park, about 1.8 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Goring goes. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Landlords with a home close to Goring & Streatley station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. If you live in an older home near Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Goring: your questions answered

Do you cover Goring?

Yes, Goring is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.

Is my home in Goring listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report follows by email.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

What’s the best way to book?

Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.

What we do, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a smaller place like Goring, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Advice

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • A price for the repairs
  • Areas we can’t see safely

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Goring?

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Driving rain then gets in through the gaps. Most people book a report soon after a storm, when they’ve seen damage or water has come in.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles

Take a building like Goring Church of England Aided Primary School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Their report turnaround times

What a good roof survey covers

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How big the roof is

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

Booking your survey

There is no need for technical words. Just let us know:

  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.
