Storm damage roof reports in Hamstreet

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Hamstreet

We inspect the roof from wherever it can safely be seen: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there is access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. Typical surveys look at cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and ridge tiles that have come loose, across gutters and fascias, flat roofs and chimney stacks.

For a small place like Hamstreet, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What we look for on each type of roof

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.

Lead flashings

When flashings lift, water can get behind them. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

What affects the price in Hamstreet

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. This is what makes a difference:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The size of the roof
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Getting in touch

We’ll usually ask about:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • What made you get in touch
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The property’s address and postcode

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

How the survey works

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Around Hamstreet, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

Before the survey

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Find any records of previous roof work

Advice

Hamstreet: your questions answered

Is my home in Hamstreet listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover Hamstreet?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Hamstreet is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but your policy sets the actual test.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from ground level first if it’s safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it is applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

What we cannot see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Ridges and hips
  • Flat roofs
  • Flashings
  • Chimney stacks
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes

Why act early in Hamstreet

Storm damage roof reports around Hamstreet

Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

Landlords with a home close to Ham Street station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. For an older house near a landmark like Church of the Good Shepherd, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Hamstreet?

Insurers frequently want evidence of what has been damaged and why. A written report with photos gives you something clear to pass on. The decision still rests with the insurer.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Damaged flat roof membrane
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • New damp or leaks inside

If you look after a building like Hamstreet Primary Academy, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Questions to ask before you book
