Haylands Storm Damage Roof Report
We carry out storm damage roof reports in Haylands and the rest of the Isle of Wight. We survey on any day of the week.
- Damaged ridges and hips
- Roofs hit by falling trees
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
How a storm damage roof report works in Haylands
When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. We’re often asked to look into flat roof edges peeled back and lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles, across gutters and fascias, flashings and chimney stacks.
Around Haylands, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, through worn flaunching, failed pointing or lifted flashings. Damp on a chimney breast is not always rain from above, which is why it’s worth tracing properly. It’s worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

When you need someone else
Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

Common questions in Haylands
Do you cover smaller places like Haylands?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Is my home in Haylands listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What’s the best way to book?
Simply call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
What wind speed counts as a storm?
Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but your policy sets the actual test.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
How long will you be at the property?
Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
When to book a survey in Haylands
Storms do not only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.
Common reasons to book include:
- Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
For hotels and guest houses around Haylands, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.
What to check before booking
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
Why it’s worth a survey now in Haylands
Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is typically better. Around Haylands, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Leaks and storm damage in Haylands
Haylands lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Strong wind lifts anything already loose, and driving rain gets in wherever it can, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. Thatch survives on some older Isle of Wight buildings, and sea air and wind reach every part of the island. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you let a flat or house near Ryde St Johns Road station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. The streets around a church like Church of St. Michael and All Angels are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.
Haylands is about 1 mile south-west of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. We visit Haylands as part of our work across the Isle of Wight, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. We cover towns and villages across the Isle of Wight. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.
Here we cover the PO33 postcode area for storm damage roof reports. Local streets include Play Lane, Pell Lane and Upton Road, and we cover them all. Other places close to Haylands include Upton (1 mile south-west), Ryde (1 mile north-east), Oakfield (1 mile east), Binstead (1 mile north-west) and Elmfield (1 mile east). We also work in nearby towns such as Newport (6 miles west), Cowes (6 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south) and East Cowes (5 miles north-west). Harder-to-reach addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Around Haylands
Around Haylands, our work takes us to homes and buildings near The Falcon pub, Ryde Academy and Ryde School with Upper Chine, among other places. For rail, the closest station is Ryde St Johns Road station, about 0.9 miles north-east. Well-known places in the area include Sandown Castle (4.4 miles south) and Gosport War Memorial Hospital (5.3 miles north). Not far away are Alan Hersey Nature Reserve and Brading Down.
DIY checks: what’s safe
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What happens on the day
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey typically takes an hour or two at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Haylands, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photographs.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Jot down any questions you want answered
