When to book a survey in Jenkins' Green

Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. An independent report gives you another view of the roof. What happens next is up to the insurer.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Damage from fallen branches or debris
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Flat roof edges peeled back

If you look after a building such as Hankham Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Before booking anyone

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Their report turnaround times
  • What experience they bring
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

What’s in a roof survey

How a storm damage roof report works in Jenkins' Green

The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. Common reasons to book are slipped or missing slates or tiles and holes or cracks caused by debris, on flat roofs, ridges and hips and flashings.

In a village or hamlet like Jenkins' Green, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Around Jenkins' Green, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

Storm damage roof reports around Jenkins' Green

Jenkins' Green lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather. Historic houses like Michelham Priory, about 4.8 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Jenkins' Green goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you let a flat or house near Pevensey & Westham station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Take an older house close to St Luke's Church: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Jenkins' Green is about 3 miles north of Eastbourne, in East Sussex. We visit Jenkins' Green as part of our work across East Sussex, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. We cover towns and villages across East Sussex, large and small. You can also see our page for Brighton.

What this survey can’t tell you

A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Estimates of repair costs
  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Slate and tile slopes

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Older stacks with worn pointing or cracked flaunching are more likely to suffer. We record both the storm damage and the older wear.

Lead flashings

Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. We record which are loose or damaged.

FAQs for Jenkins' Green

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Jenkins' Green?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details like ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and Jenkins' Green is within about 3 miles of the coast.

Is my home in Jenkins' Green listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access as you book.

Is Jenkins' Green in your area?

Yes, we do. Jenkins' Green is part of the area we cover.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

How experienced are you?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from the ground if it is safe. Those photos show the damage as it was. In a place like Jenkins' Green, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
