Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Little Stanmore
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. You can then give it to your insurer with your claim. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We are not loss adjusters and cannot say whether a claim will be paid. Common reasons to book are loose or torn flashings and damaged flat roof membrane, on chimney stacks, flat roofs and ridges and hips.
London’s Victorian and Edwardian roofs have often been repaired many times, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Insurers typically exclude wear and tear, so it helps to know whether damage is old or new. A careful look in Little Stanmore tells the two apart where the evidence allows. Photos and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

The survey, step by step
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In Little Stanmore, as in much of London, plenty of properties are flats or terraces without side access, so the back of the roof is often seen from upstairs windows, from inside or, where a flight is allowed, from the air. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us as you book.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the roof space where it’s safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
- The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Questions from Little Stanmore
Is my home in Little Stanmore listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover Little Stanmore?
Yes, Little Stanmore is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and South East England. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the property.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Please do not climb onto the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.
Are you loss adjusters?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Photograph the damage safely from below
- Read your policy wording on storm damage
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
- Photograph damage inside the house too
If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.
Checking the roof from the ground
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Storm damage roof reports in Little Stanmore: local notes
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. The wider area around Little Stanmore has a long history of building, with Headstone Manor about 3.1 miles west. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
For landlords with property near Mill Hill Broadway station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. For businesses in and around places like Broadwalk Centre, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast. The streets around a church like Church of St Lawrence are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

Why act early in Little Stanmore
It helps to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That is a good reason to find problems early, while there is time to plan, rather than in a rush after a leak.
