About our storm damage roof report in Loyterton
The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you’ve noticed damaged gutters and fascias and damage from fallen branches or debris, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Being in a small place like Loyterton makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

Tips from our surveys
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
How it works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Somewhere like Loyterton needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.
- First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Let us know about parking near the property

Common questions in Loyterton
Is my home in Loyterton listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Loyterton?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.
How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Loyterton?
It’s easiest to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Leaks and storm damage in Loyterton
Loyterton is within about 4 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather. Belmont House and Gardens, about 3.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Loyterton. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you let a flat or house near Teynham station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Trees in and around Doddington Place Gardens shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
Loyterton is about 4 miles west of Faversham, in Kent. Loyterton is one of many places we visit across Kent, for homes and businesses alike. Across Kent, we cover Loyterton. There is also a page for Maidstone.

Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Doddington Place Gardens and Black Lion Public House, among other places. For rail, the closest station is Teynham station, about 1.8 miles north. Well-known places in the area include Newnham Castle (1.5 miles south) and Sittingbourne Heritage Museum (3.4 miles north-west).
Can I check my roof myself?
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridge and hip tiles
Ridge tiles bedded in old mortar can loosen in high winds. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.
Flat roof coverings
Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. We record what we find.
When to book a survey in Loyterton
Insurers often want evidence of what has been damaged and why. A written report with photos gives you something clear to pass on. Your insurer still makes the decision.
Problems we come across often include:
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
- Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
- Damaged ridges and hips
- Damaged gutters and fascias
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Peter and St Paul, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
