About our storm damage roof report in Palmers Green

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It is yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we cannot tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey flashings, flat roofs and ridges and hips, and the problems we are asked to look at most are roofs hit by falling trees and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks.

Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Telling wear from a one-off event matters, because insurers normally exclude wear and tear. A careful look in Palmers Green tells the two apart where the evidence allows. A written record with photos helps you explain what was found to whoever deals with it next.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What we do, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a London area like Palmers Green, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. We then look at what can safely be seen from the ground, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Questions from Palmers Green

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Palmers Green?

Normally it’s manageable with a little notice. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Palmers Green?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. Our report then records the roof.

Do you work in Palmers Green?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes Palmers Green.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Complain to your insurer first. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, but we can’t say how it will turn out.

Can I check my roof myself?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Why it is worth a survey now in Palmers Green

It’s useful to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. A hidden valley or parapet gutter on a London house can hold water for weeks before anyone notices. When the stain finally shows, the damage underneath is often older than it looks.

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

What’s in a roof survey

What this survey cannot tell you

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Palmers Green

Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. With Bruce Castle about 1.9 miles south-east, Palmers Green sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

Living close to Broomfield Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Palmers Green United Reformed Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.
