Storm damage roof report in Radwinter: what you get

A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. If you’ve noticed gutters pulled loose in the wind and ridge tiles that have come loose, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on gutters and fascias, flashings and flat roofs alike.

In a village or hamlet like Radwinter, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

FAQs for Radwinter

Do you carry out roof surveys in Radwinter?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Radwinter?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Only from the ground or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

Only your insurer can decide that. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

What we can’t see

Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Keep records of roof work and surveys. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.

Storm damage roof reports around Radwinter

England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. If you look after a building such as Radwinter Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

What happens if roof problems are left?

With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

How it works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes about one to two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere as small as Radwinter, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Getting ready for the survey

What you can safely check yourself

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
