Storm damage roof reports in Wimbish

What you can safely check yourself

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

About our storm damage roof report in Wimbish

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Check your own policy wording. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. Typical surveys look at damaged pots on the stack and lead lifted at abutments, on slate and tile slopes, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.

Somewhere as small as Wimbish, older roofs have often been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. We look at everything that’s safely in view and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Useful tips for Wimbish property owners

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm

The insurer might appoint a loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record alongside theirs.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

When you need someone else

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias

Roof by roof

Flat roof coverings

Lifted trims and laps are common after a storm. We look at whether the damage is recent or older.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Roof area
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • House, block, shop or office

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Getting in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange

Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will explain the options and the price.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Wimbish can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Getting ready for the survey

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

Advice

Wimbish questions

How do I find out if my home in Wimbish is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you cover smaller places like Wimbish?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

We can’t say whether a claim will be paid. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

Is wear and tear covered by insurance?

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. We note both storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Storm damage roof reports in Wimbish: local notes

In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. About 4.1 miles south lies Horham Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Wimbish has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you own a rental within reach of Newport (Essex) station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Take a building like Wimbish Primary School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Take an older house close to St Paul's Mission Room: leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
