Shanklin Village Storm Damage Roof Report
An independent record of roof damage after a storm in Shanklin Village. We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Damaged pots on the stack
- Damaged flat roof membrane
- Stains appearing after strong winds
Practical tips
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Photograph the damage safely from below
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
- Photograph damage inside the house too
After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They can help show the roof was looked after.
How a storm damage roof report works in Shanklin Village
If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are slates and tiles blown off the roof and flat roof edges peeled back.
Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Telling wear from a one-off event matters, because insurers typically exclude wear and tear. That’s as true in Shanklin Village as anywhere in London. A written record with photos helps you explain what was found to whoever deals with it next.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Why act early in Shanklin Village
Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from the ground if it is safe. Those photos show the damage as it was. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and which survey you book.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Shanklin Village
Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. An independent report gives you another view of the roof. What happens next is up to the insurer.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Water coming in after the storm
- Damaged ridges and hips
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St John, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
What to check before booking
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
- What experience they bring
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Is VAT included in the price?
Leaks and storm damage in Shanklin Village
About 1.6 miles north-west lies Nonsuch Mansion, a reminder of how long the area around Shanklin Village has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs. Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you own a rental within reach of Belmont station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near The Ashley Centre, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters.

Shanklin Village questions
Is parking a problem for a survey in Shanklin Village?
It can be, so it helps to let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.
Do you cover Shanklin Village?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Shanklin Village as anywhere else.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we can’t say how it will turn out.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you as you book.
How much is a storm damage roof report?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only if it is safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Can I check my roof myself?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
How it works
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes about one to two hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. From the street, a London terrace typically shows only its front slope or parapet, so a visit in Shanklin Village moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Let us know who holds the keys.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
